According to Wikipedia (an online collaborative encyclopedia), the word wiki comes from the Hawaiian word for quick.  Some users also believe the term is an acronym for What I Know Is...

Wikipedia is the most common example of a wiki because as of March 12, 2008, over 2,276,000 articles have been created and collaboratively edited by people just like you.

What makes a wiki so special?  Watch how a wiki can be a great tool for collaboration.

According to the makers of PBwiki, a wiki can serve lots of purposes, too.

So just to summarize, wikis are useful because:

  • students enjoy using the technology
  • they don't require students learning lots of html code
  • pbwiki and other wiki sites are typically free for educational use
  • wikis allow students a chance to collaborate with other students and teachers
  • they can be used to address state standards
  • they encourage students and teachers to comment to each other and to link to other connected content on the web.
